If you are considering Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) or Laminate, you are looking at a "floating floor" system. At Capitol Carpet & Tile, we always tell our clients: The floor is only as good as what lies beneath it.
What is a Floating Floor?
A floating floor isn't nailed or glued to the subfloor. Instead, the planks lock together like a puzzle, staying in place through friction and weighted distribution.
Because the floor "floats" as a single unit, it expands and contracts slightly with temperature changes.
This necessitates a buffer between the planks and the hard concrete slabs common in South Florida homes.
The Barrier Against the Slab
Florida homes sit on porous concrete. Concrete acts like a sponge, drawing moisture up from the ground through capillary action.
Without a high-quality Vapor Barrier Underlayment, that moisture can get trapped under your new planks, leading to "cupping," mold growth, or the failure of the locking mechanism.
In 2026, we recommend underlayments with an integrated 6-mil poly-film. This acts as a permanent shield, ensuring that the "breathability" of the concrete never compromises the integrity of your beautiful new floor.
Sound Absorption and "The Click"
Have you ever walked on a floor that sounded hollow or "clack-y"? That is usually the result of cheap or missing underlayment.
Quality padding—whether it’s high-density foam, felt, or cork—absorbs impact noise. This is especially vital for our clients in Palm Beach and Broward condos where HOA rules often require specific Sound Transmission Class (STC) ratings to prevent neighbors from hearing every footstep.
Beyond just noise, the right underlayment adds a "compression strength" that prevents the floor from feeling mushy, giving you a firm, high-end walking experience.
Correcting Imperfections
No concrete slab is perfectly flat. A premium underlayment acts as a "bridge" over minor pits and peaks in the subfloor.
This prevents the locking joints of your floor from over-flexing, which is the #1 cause of floor failure over time.
By smoothing out these micro-deviations, the underlayment ensures that the pressure of your furniture and footsteps is distributed evenly, preserving the manufacturer's warranty and the floor's visual alignment.
