How much should I budget for window coverings?

As gorgeous as your favorite window coverings may be, they may not fit into your home improvement budget once you add up all the costs. That?s because, depending upon what window treatments you?d like in your home, some of them can really cost a pretty penny. Unless you have a limitless budget, though, let?s face it, most of us don?t, you?ll need to figure out how much money you should budget for window coverings.
Having said that, we?re talking about a quality investment, one that will last several decades, assuming you choose durable materials. While it is challenging to set a budget, you?ll need to gain more insight into costs, to be able to see how long it will take to save up for your beautiful window treatments.

To ensure your goal is ultimately successful, our Capitol Carpet & Tile experts have made some basic calculations to get you started.

Budgeting for window coverings: Basic costs
Typically, it costs anywhere from $106 to $828 per treatment, per window, with the national average currently set at $463 per window for a new covering.

Curtains and drapes. Of all the window coverings, curtains and drapes are the easiest to install. All you?ll really need is a curtain rod, though some drapes do require a mechanical system to open and close the material. Prices vary greatly, as it all depends upon what color, style, and material you select. For as little as $10, you can get some very basic panels. On the other hand, if you?re looking for silk panels, then you?ll be in the $1,000 price range, or more.

Basic shades or blinds. When budgeting for window coverings, you may be glad to know that basic roller shades or aluminum blinds, or other styles of kind, only cost somewhere in the $7 to $25 each range. While they?re incredibly straightforward to install, they?re not the most durable option on the market.

Customized shades or blinds. If you?re looking for quality and versatility, the higher-end options of customized shades and blinds offer better craftsmanship and durability. Bamboo and wood, for instance, when paired with motorized features, allow customers to open and close their shades remotely. On the low end of costs, you?ll see prices around $100 per window, while on the higher end at somewhere starting at $1,000 or more.
Shutters. Like custom shades or blinds, shutters need to be custom measured and professionally installed. They can cost as low as $20 per shutter, though it all depends upon what materials you select. However, on average, you?ll be looking at anywhere between $250 to $700 for quality materials.

Installation
While several window coverings are fairly easy to install, you?re always better off with a trained installation professional. As you can imagine, this will drive up the cost of your budget for window treatments anywhere from about $45 to $165. Of course, these prices depend upon the number of window treatments installed.
