What is through-body tile flooring?

You?ll probably hear phrases like ?through-body? and ?color body? in the tile store, especially when the subject of lifespan comes up. We?ll explain how the two are related.

And how it relates to porcelain

Porcelain comes either glazed or unglazed. Through-body pertains to unglazed porcelain; the color goes through the bisque, so chips and scratches aren't noticeable.

Color body refers to glazed porcelain where the coating is closely matched to the color of the bisque. It's not an exact match, but you won't see white chips and scratches.

This relates to a long lifespan because the floor tile won't look damaged, shabby and worn. When installed and taken care of properly, tile can last over 50 years.

About porcelain and ceramic

Porcelain's construction includes non-absorbent clay, as well as glass and sand. As a result, it's ultra-durable and great for heavily trafficked floors.

This large-format tile comes in countless designs and colors. It can be made to look like anything and is often preferred for wood-and-stone look tiles.

When you enter our tile store, you?ll learn the differences between porcelain and ceramic. We have a large inventory with brands like Daltile and Bedrosians Tile & Stone.

Ceramics

Ceramics are thinner, highly decorative, and usually glazed. The glazing makes them waterproof with a hard outer shell.

Most of us are familiar with the 4 X 4 square. It's used on indoor, moderately busy floors, backsplashes, walls, and counters.

Other ceramics include mosaics, subways, and terracotta bricks.
